1. iRobot S8
This smart robot mop and vacuum is a great option for a wide range of households. It vacuums and mops well and is extremely navigable using both GPS and laser sensors, and comes with a variety of controls and features accessible via the app. It also comes with a useful feature that lets you add cleaning zones to certain areas that require extra attention, and also to keep Out zones that you don't want it to move. And, like all Roomba devices, it receives new software updates that make it better over time.
It's costly however, it's also among the most advanced robot vacuums that ZDNet has evaluated. It comes with a powerful battery that can clean an entire home in less than two hours. It can switch between vacuuming and mopping by pressing a button. It will automatically empty the bin of dust above its charging station, unlike other self-emptying robots that require you to empty the bin after each run.
It also has many other features, such as intelligent obstacle avoidance that uses cameras and processor-powered smarts to recognize obstacles. It isn't often entangled or trapped during a cleaning cycle and is also the most effective in avoiding power cables and other objects in my tests. However, it's not as reliable at detecting pet waste or other hazards.
2. Eufy RoboVac X8 Hybrid
Although Anker-owned Eufy has made a name for itself in low-cost robot vacuums it's not yet an all-in-one model that can also mop. That's changed with the X8 Hybrid, which has an impressive set of modern features and is able to compete against much more expensive models.
Laser navigation is the primary selling point of this machine. The X8 makes use of the laser mapping system, which is more precise than previous Eufy devices. It also takes a lot less time to construct an accurate map of your space and stores multiple maps, which is great for multi-floor homes.
The X8 is still a good vacuum on floors with no dust and can sling debris over its side brushes and into its 400ml dust bin with relative ease. The X8's tyres, despite having a circular shape, are efficient at grabbing corners and edges. Our tests showed that it could only remove 90 percent of the fur on hard floors.
The basic mopping mode uses the same reservoir of water as the vacuuming mode. While this is great for spills that aren't too big, you can't regulate the amount of water it uses and this will reduce its effectiveness on more serious stains. It is effective at picking up hair from pets. It has a higher rate of pick-up than the Roborock S7.
3. Miele RX2
Known for quietly effective home appliances, Miele's RX2 robot vacuum is a great choice because of its cleaning power, stunning design and excellent navigation. It has some oddities in its operation, which prevent it from being ranked as the top smart robot vacuum.
Similar to the latest models of iRobot like the RX2 features dual-sensor mapping technology that uses the LIDAR sensor to map a room and three 3D scanning cameras to detect and avoid obstacles (like furniture legs or pet waste) in real time. Once the room is mapped the app allows you to assign virtual no-go areas and preferred areas that the robot will automatically clean. You can also begin an automatic clean or manually change the cleaning mode, see a live feed from the onboard cameras, and more from the main screen.
The RX2 has excellent sensors that can identify furniture and other obstructions immediately. Its sweeping and suction powers are exceptional, taking away surface debris from carpets of medium pile and also removing embedded dust on floors. But it's not the most flexible robot available. As with many others it's not a very good climber and has trouble with things like thresholds made of steel transition strips.
Some people buy a robot vacuum for the hands-off convenience of setting up a schedule using an app and forgetting about it for weeks at one time. However, it's essential that a machine can get the job done, which is the reason why our ZDNet staff examined and reviewed a few of the most well-known models to help you select the right one for your home.
4. Shark ION
This round, budget robot looks like your typical robot but it's a step up in terms of performance and features. Its smart mapping system generates 3D and 2D maps of your home and uses those to navigate and avoid obstacles. It's also able to detect common obstacles such as furniture legs and power cords in real time. This combination of sensors together with a bump sensor and an infrared drop sensor that keeps it away from the stairs, makes it one of the fastest vacs we've tried.
It was able to climb over the thick shag carpets and did not get stuck (unlike the RoboVac 11s or Roomba 690-). Its navigation capabilities were impressive. Its composite score for flooring and carpet beats the competition and it was able to pick up 98.5 percent of the surface litter and embedded dog hair from our lab test samples.
The controls are more basic than those of competitors. There's an uniform cleaning button on the top. You can start it from the app or by voice commands with Alexa or Google Assistant. You can also set a schedule for weekly or daily cleans, create areas that are not allowed to be cleaned, and check its cleaning history. Ion is covered in a smart dark gray plastic that is both attractive and beautiful in your home. The rear dust bin is easy to access for emptying and removing the filter is just as simple.
5. Eufy 11S
Eufy 11S is a great option if you're looking for a vacuum cleaner that is easy to use and has no frills at a cost that is low. It lacks some of the more advanced features, like digital mapping and Alexa integration, found in higher-end models but if you don't need these features, you can save a floor vacuum robot little cost with this model.
The robot is simple to use and set up. It doesn't require smartphone application or Wi-Fi pairing. However it does include an remote control that lets you choose between various modes and adjust the suction levels. You can also assign the robotvac to the schedule of cleaning.
During our tests, we discovered that the 11S was extremely efficient in removing pet fur and dirt from carpets with low pile and hard floors. Its slim profile made it easier to reach under furniture and other items that more bulkier robots were unable to reach. It was also able to easily traverse door thresholds and move from one floor type to another.
Like other robots, the 11S can be able to suck up objects like cords, drawstrings on hoodies, and cat toys. The manufacturer states that you can prevent this by keeping these items off the floor and using the possibility of a cord organizer. It also suggests cleaning the dustbin on a regular basis, replacing the filters and washing or changing the brushes as required.
Roomba 990 by iRobot
The Roomba 980 is the flagship robot vacuum. It's costly but it's a top performer and arguably the most advanced robot vacuum you can purchase. Its self-navigation feature and environmental mapping are a joy to behold. It is more sophisticated in its automation than the majority of its competitors, such as the capability to set up virtual boundary markers using its mobile app. Although the application is a bit slow and the 980 may spin out a bit while crossing cables, it's a very capable robot vacuum.
One thing we love about the 980 is the fact that it utilizes its iAdapt 2.0 navigation sensors and its visual simultaneous mapping and localisation technology (or vSLAM) to memorise the floor plan of your home. It will use this information to create a consistent, efficient cleaning path in every cycle. The result is cleaner floors and a better robot vacuum than most high-end robots.
Other features include dual multi-surface rubber brushes, which grab dirt from carpets and hard floors and a spinning brush that sweeps debris into the robotic vacuum's bin. Its floor tracking sensors help it navigate between furniture and around edges, while Cliff Detect keeps the Roomba from falling down stairs. It will also return to the base station to allow for recharging in between sessions. The battery life and bin capacity of the 980 aren't as great as other robot vacuums. However, it is a solid and reliable machine that can keep floors clean for many hours.
